The History Trail at Moores Creek National Battlefield in Pender County is part of the 1,175-mile Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Photo: National Park Service This month marks the 45th birthday of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Now a 1,175-mile trail from Clingmans Dome, or Kuwohi, in the Smoky Mountains to Jockey's Ridge on the Outer Banks, the idea for the trail was introduced in Sept. 9, 1977. Howard Lee, then secretary of the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Community Development, proposed, 'establishing a state trail between the mountains and the seashore in North Carolina,' according to the Friends of the Mountains-to-the-Sea Trail, or MST, a nonprofit organization that supports and advocates for the trail.
